RVing And The Internet
As the baby boomers ready for retirement it is widely speculated that the number of RVers will increase in the coming years. The overall U.S. population is getting older, and people are entering the RV market at a younger age. In this decade, an average of 12,000 Baby Boomers per day will turn 50. What's more, ownership of RVs among 45 to 54 year- olds, the core of the Baby Boom generation, has risen 25% since 1993 . That's more of an increase than in any other age group. Meanwhile, life expectancy is also increasing, lengthening an individual's years of active RVing. The bottom line? The total population in the RV segment is growing at a rate never seen before.
This fact coupled with many middle- aged families turning to RVing also point to a significant increase in this industry segment. In the next 10 years, the number of RV- owning households will rise from 9 million to 10.4 million, according to the Recreation Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). That's a 15% increase in ownership during a period when population growth is less than 5%!
In recent years the Internet has gone through significant change as a direct result of higher bandwidth speeds being available. Video has become a mainstream way of communicating. The explosion of You Tube clearly demonstrates this, with Presidential debates even using this format, a further demonstration of the formats popularity.
There are now “how to” sites that have videos on how to do hundreds of things, from fixing a leaking faucet to changing a turbo on a diesel engine. Internet broadcasts started out as just audio downloads and quickly moved to full motion videos. Today one can subscribe to a variety of Video-casts. For example if you miss Meet The Press on Sunday morning, you can have it automatically downloaded (without commercials) and watch it at your convenience on your Computer, I-Pod, PDA or Cell phone.
More and more businesses are turning to this technology as a better way to provide customer information and support . Because the video can be stopped, rewound, replayed and seen, versus just heard; the medium is excellent for communicating. The technology is just beginning to hit RV related industries.
How is a RV Campsite Selected?
In today ’s RV world there are 4 ways to select an RV campground, each with its limitations.
1. The first is the printed directory. These directories are the size of phone books and are confined to the printed word. This medium does not give the reader a true “feel” for the park and its amenities. Many of the printed directories have a rating system in 3 key areas to help the reader get a sense of how the park measures up. The printed directory cannot be changed easily or ‘on demand ’thereby locking in the message and information the advertiser can provide.
2. The second method is the Internet, whereby the website of the campground can be consulted for information. This data is biased but will often include visual pictures to help the searcher get a “feel ”for the park. In some cases the pictures don’t quite match the reality when the RVer arrives. This method does allow for quick changes to the message and provides the ability to have the message tailored to the reader.
3. The third method is Word-of-Mouth information. This method of obtaining information is used through Internet forums specifically geared for RVers. The searcher is able to ask direct questions or query others about favorite spots in a desired location. While the searcher is still subject to the opinions of another person and this can be subjective, the needs and desires of RVers run pretty close.
4. Finally the last method is the Take-a-Chance method. This, as the name implies, is used as a high-risk way to learn of new campgrounds. Sometimes it works well and nuggets are found and other times the results are wanting.
